Position Description
Full-Time, Salaried, Performance-Based Bonus
Location: San Francisco, CA
Salary Range: $90k – $120k / annually

Conventus is seeking an experienced Construction Underwriter to join our dynamic team. The Construction Underwriter is responsible for evaluating and underwriting construction loan requests, this is for renovation, and value-add real estate projects. This role requires detailed analysis of borrower qualifications, project feasibility, budgets, timelines, contractor strength, and collateral value to ensure sound credit decisions that align with the company’s risk profile.
Responsibilities
Analyze loan applications for construction and development projects, including financial statements, budgets, pro formas, schedules, and market data.
Review and assess general contractor qualifications, construction contracts, and project team experience.
Evaluate third-party reports (appraisals, environmental, feasibility, inspection, and title reports).
Collaborate with borrowers, originators, inspectors, and internal departments throughout the underwriting process.
Ensure proposed draw schedules, cost breakdowns, and contingency reserves are appropriate and in line with market standards.
Identify and mitigate risks related to borrower credit, project execution, permitting, zoning, market conditions, and construction complexity.
Draft detailed construction memorandums with analysis and recommendations for internal loan committee review.
Ensure compliance with internal policies, investor guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
Participate in loan closings, including review of closing conditions and coordination with legal/title.
Qualifications
Required
Bachelor’s degree in Real Estate, Construction Management, or related field.
3–5+ years of underwriting experience, preferably in construction or commercial real estate lending.
Strong knowledge of construction budgets, draw schedules, contracts, and project risk assessment.
Proficiency in Excel and underwriting software (Salesforce, Land Gorilla, Trustpoint or similar tools).
Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
Preferred
Experience with various construction asset types (residential, multifamily, mixed-use, commercial).
Familiarity with lien laws, mechanics lien processes, and title review.
Understanding of construction sequencing and permitting processes.
Ability to present underwriting findings to credit committee with clarity and confidence.
